Chemotherapy is a drug treatment with strong chemicals that destroys fast-growing cells in the body. Chemotherapy is often used to treat cancer because cancer cells grow and multiply much faster than most cells in the body.

There are many different chemotherapy drugs. Chemotherapy drugs can be given alone or in combination to treat a wide variety of cancers. Although chemotherapy is an effective way to treat many types of cancer, chemotherapy treatment also carries the risk of side effects. Some side effects of chemotherapy are mild and can be treated, while others can cause serious complications.

There are a variety of situations in which chemotherapy may be used in people with cancer:

To treat cancer without other treatments.
Chemotherapy can be used as the main or only treatment for cancer.

After other treatments, to kill hidden cancer cells.
Chemotherapy may be used after other treatments, such as surgery, to kill any cancer cells that may remain in the body. Doctors call this “adjuvant therapy.”

To prepare you for other treatments.
Chemotherapy may be used to shrink a tumor so that other treatments, such as radiation or surgery, are possible. Doctors call this “neoadjuvant therapy.”

To relieve signs and symptoms.
Chemotherapy can help relieve the signs and symptoms of cancer by killing some of the cancer cells. Doctors call this palliative chemotherapy.

Risks:
The side effects of chemotherapy drugs can be significant. Each medication has different side effects, although not all medications cause all side effects.

Common side effects of chemotherapy drugs include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Hair loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Mouth sores
  • Pain
  • Constipation
  • Bruising that occurs easily
  • Bleeding

Many of these side effects can be avoided or treated.
Most side effects go away when treatment ends.
