Blood transfusion involves the direct administration of blood or its components into the patient’s bloodstream. In cancer patients, the need for transfusions arises due to the effects of cancer and its treatments on the bone marrow, where blood cells are produced.

Treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can reduce the production of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, causing anemia, susceptibility to infections and risk of bleeding. Transfusions provide essential blood components to maintain oxygenation, strengthen the immune system, and prevent excessive bleeding.
